You could be forgiven for expecting it will be 'chronically painful' for
you to read and consider what follows. But my hope is that it isn't too
unbearable to read about the different aspects of chronic pain affecting
millions of us.

One Planet-Two Worlds

It was the Sunday night before Christmas. We attended a contemporary play on the original meaning of the Christmas Story. It was a brilliant performance as was the wonder of digital lighting and sound. Lots of joyful children and adults of all ages. The world we were in was safe, it was healthy, exciting and I'm sure meant much to those present.

As we were leaving, I caught up with 'Terry [not his real name]. He has advanced MND. Motor Neuron Disease is  dreadful and terminal. Terry cannot move any part of his body below his neck. He is  completely dependent on professional and family care for everything. Terry said, "Do you know what I miss most? Work, I so miss work and my work-mates. My 'world' is very very small now. The doctor said breathing will eventually become increasingly difficult until I can't take another breath and then I will die. But we will give you enough morphine to be pain free." With some cynicism Terry replied, "Thanks very much!!"

I had taken a cosmic step from a world of joy to one of a slow, not-so-far-away death. I couldn't think of anything that fully respected his emotional and physical pain. So I just sat alongside him as my heart broke for Terry and his family. It was enough to be friends together in complete silence. Two worlds so different yet both very real. It was a humbling honour to be in the presence of Terry's extraordinary dignity and courage. I hope and pray for similar dignity and courage when it is my time.
