This one-liner comes out usually when what is truly important needs to be closely held when confronted with threatening times. As I re-discovered recently. I was carrying my grand-daughter up some wet stone steps. Simple enough. I stepped onto the 2nd top step, lost my balance and fell backwards onto stone slabs to be used to finish these steps. Mercifully the toddler fell on top of me but unhurt, just a big fright. I collected some injuries. I recognise a miracle when I see one. This certainly was one when I think of what could have been for both of us.
As our Intensive Care Paramedic son was attending to my wounds our little 3 yr old grand-daughter who had fallen with me decided she too would help. She got her colouring in pens one at a time to colour in the back of my hand, glancing up for my approval. This went on for some time. She has lots of pens. After our little girl's tender attention, she levelled her intense stare deep into my eyes asking if her colouring in was making me feel better. When I said, "I'm feeling much better now thank you", I saw a little smile frame her eyes and mouth that said, "I knew it would!"
There is a wonderful mystery here. The loving care of our grand-daughter was as healing as was the professional skills of our son. A child 70yrs younger than me took my coloured-in hand and without saying a word confidently said, “You’ll get better now Granddad.” Someone well said, “...and a little child shall lead them.” And she did. My precious moment in time won't be forgotten...ever.
